Five of Renesas’ wafer processing facilities and three of its back-end facilities were damaged by the earthquake on Mar 11. Of these, as of midday on March 24 the Naka Factory is the only site not to either have resumed partial or full productions, or be in the process of startup procedures. Naka’s 200mm lines produce mainly automotive and other MCUs.

According to auto industry analyst, Noriaki Hirakata, automakers are moving beyond their normal affiliations to support the more than 500 damaged suppliers in the Tohoku region. Automakers’ values and ethics suggest they will likely spend time looking to restore operations at damaged existing suppliers, rather than finding new suppliers.

Resuming production at Naka is probably the most expedient in the end: The process of confirming conditions of Naka’s 200mm lines only began on Mar 24 and it is too soon to predict when production will restart.

Automakers are unlikely to contract parts production to new suppliers in unaffected regions. Contracts require a qualification period of at least three months (more than one year is likely for engine controlling MCUs). Automakers’ values and ethics suggest they will likely spend that time looking to restore operations at damaged existing suppliers.

Most expedient is to resume production at Naka factory, next best is to transfer output to other Renesas lines Work to confirm the condition of 200mm line cleanrooms at Naka only began on March 24, and it is still hard to predict when production will restart. If it had limited excess capacity at substitute factories, Renesas is likely to prioritize automotive MCUs, rather than commodity-type ICs.

Renesas Electronics: In a press release on Mar 28 the company said it expects to be able to meet 70% of orders for semiconductor products manufactured in Naka received from customers for delivery by end-May with completed product and product that is already in the assembly process. For the remaining 30% for delivery by end-May, subsequent deliveries, and orders received from here, the company will work as fast as possible to resume output in Naka while also taking alternative steps such as producing at other fabs. The company aims to resume production in Naka on a limited scale from Jul.

Automotive MCU
Low to mid-range autos generally contain about 50 MCUs, which include power train sections (engine controls, transmissions), chassis’ (power steering, ABS/ESP), vehicle bodies (door modules, power windows, wiper controls, air-conditioning, etc.), in-car multimedia (audio, navigation systems), security features (keyless entry, immobilisers), and safety features (airbags, passenger sensors).

The Taiwan Economic News is reporting that a range of domestic hi-tech firms have received rush orders. Companies rushing for supplies include Fulltech Fiber Glass Corp(富喬), which has made a panic buy of fibre glass yarn, while Powercom (科風) has  received orders for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) at "several times the normal level".

Companies are also turning to Taiwan to get their fill of IC assembly and lithium batteries for notebook PCs. The latter is because Sony and Toshiba have both closed plants that made these in Japan, which has benefitted Taiwanese suppliers, such as Simplo Technology(新普), which has has received orders for NB PC battery modules from Japanese clients.

Taiwan is also taking increased orders of aluminium electrolytic capacitors(鋁電解電容), due to the uncertainty concerning the damage on the facilities of Murat and other Japanese major suppliers.
